We are still with the Ottomans, Anatolia and its story.. and that strange history.. into which more fabrication has been crammed than truth.
If you go back, say, 52 centuries, you will find that the Egyptian kings had a father, a mother and sons.. and you could trace the family of someone like "Narmer" and know exactly who his grandfather was.
The Arabian Peninsula was not at the same level of development from 20 centuries before Christ.. its life was simple and Bedouin.. but even so, if you went back you would find that every king and every ruler there had a recorded, documented origin, lineage and pedigree.. you would find the king of Kinda or Ma'in — in present-day Saudi Arabia — was called such-and-such, his father was so-and-so, and he allied himself with the Yemeni king "Yusuf Dhu Nuwas" son of "Isar" son of "Yithar".. and so on...
And if you jumped to the era we are talking about.. in the Mamluk era.. you would find that "Saif al-Din Qutuz" is "Mahmoud ibn Mamdoud ibn Khwarazm Shah", and the Syrian fighter "al-Zahir Baybars" is "Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Ala'i al-Bunduqdari". Meaning people's origins and families are known.. even though "Baybars", for example, was originally a Mamluk slave.
You will not find this matter at all with the Ottomans.. and this is the cause of a major problem for contemporary Turkish historians.. they decided to solve it by starting this history with a man called "Ertuğrul".
Fine.. so who is this "Ertuğrul" they are raising to the heavens? They told us: "He is the son of the warrior hero Suleiman Shah."
Fine, this gentleman "Suleiman Shah", the cinema hero they are raising to the heavens, died an unpleasant death.. when the Mongols attacked his tribe.. so he pushed his wives out into the courtyard of the house.. and left them as prey for the Mongols to busy themselves with.. and he rushed into his bedroom and locked the door.. and jumped from the window completely naked, ignoring his wives' pleas for help.. and ran to his horse just as his mother bore him, in order to escape.. so the Mongols' horses chased him.. and out of terror he threw himself into the Euphrates River without knowing how to swim.. and he drowned.
Is this really the hero, the grandfather of the Ottomans.. and the father of the terrifying "Ertuğrul"?
They said: "Ah, ah, right.. that does not work.. the truth is he was the son of "Gündüz Alp".
Well, good people.. you are telling us that the great conquering fighter "Ertuğrul" invaded "the village of Söğüt" and conquered it in 1231 AD... and regardless of the fact that you turned a fight between two villages into a conquest, an invasion and a world war and called it (Ertuğrul Ghazi) afterwards.. "Gündüz Alp" was at that time six years old and (Ertuğrul) was 36 years old! Meaning how and when did he father "Ertuğrul"?
So they came out and said "Ah, by God, you're right? No, it's that Suleiman Shah.. he himself is Gündüz Alp".
Well, people, if we assume this nonsense is true.. then "Ertuğrul" becomes Persian in origin.. because "Suleiman Shah" was originally a Persian from Khorasan in Iran.. and you deny the Ottomans' descent from the Persians with all your might.
And then a great Turkish historian entered the fray.. his name is "Halil İnalcık".. professor of Ottoman history at Bilkent University in Ankara.. and he said to them "How, people, can Suleiman Shah be Gündüz Alp.. and be the father of Ertuğrul.. when (Gündüz Alp) it is originally.. proven that he is the son of Ertuğrul from (Halime Hatun)..?"
Here they told us:
- Ah.. look.. "Gündüz" is indeed the son of "Ertuğrul", not his father.. and he is not the son of the Persian "Suleiman Shah" or anything.. the truth is that the origin and lineage of "Ertuğrul" are "shrouded in mystery"...!!
So why did this mess happen? Because this gentleman "Atman" whom the Arabs called "Osman".. "Osman I" son of "Ertuğrul" and founder of the Ottoman State.. found himself in a real problem.. that he was a king and a military commander.. and yet of unknown lineage.. and not only that.. even his grandmother.. the mother of (Ertuğrul).. her real name was unknown too.. and her common name was "Hayme Hayme".. which in their language means "tent".. or, to put it politely, as far as the places where men rest go.. and her reputation was not very honorable.
At that point "Osman" gathered the scribes and historians around him.. and lavished gifts on them so they would write him a history of his family that he would love and be pleased with.. and the first thing he began with was changing his grandmother's title from "tent" to "Haymana".
And after a while.. they found the Arabs were mocking the name.. because it differs in the Ottoman language.. but in Arabic it also means something unemotional.. "Haymana", how do you mean?
So he went and changed it again to "Afyana".. and then he found that "Afyana" was a somewhat modern name that did not exist in his grandmother's day.. meaning it is as if you came today and said "Baybars' grandmother, people, her name was Mahtab".
So he went and changed it again to "Afa".
And then he discovered that "Afa" is a Persian name.. so he went and reworked the name "Haymah - tent".. and said her name was "Haymana Haymana".. meaning "dominion".. because she was a queen and dominant and hegemonic and an object of pride, so to speak.
Well, guys, what is this tampering? Meaning what was this woman's name? They left the answer to the Turkish historian "Necdet Sakaoğlu", who answered with dignity:
"As for the personality of Lady (Haymana Hanım), we know very little about her.. even her traits and the description of her features have not reached us.. and her history has not been well researched by historians"...!
And because they know nothing about her and do not know what she looked like.. they made statues of her in Turkey carrying her grandson, the founder of the Ottoman State "Osman I".. like the statue in this picture.
Lady "Haymah" had 3 other sons besides "Ertuğrul".. among them one called "Dündar Bey".. the uncle of "Osman I".. and this "Osman I" assassinated him with a fatal arrow shot.. and he was truly skilled in using the bow and arrow.. because they were quarrelling over rule.
And she had two other sons.. one called "Gündoğdu Bey", and we also do not know who his father was, nor are there accurate sources about the date of his birth at all, nor does anyone know where he went or what his fate was.. and the other, likewise an uncle of "Osman I".. his name was "Saru Batu Savcı Bey", and he was the brother of "Osman I".
Let us read the previous sentence once more in case you did not notice its content.
"Saru Batu Savcı Bey", the uncle of "Osman I".. was at the same time.. the brother of "Osman I"!
Anyway, whatever their lovely family relations.. this gentleman "Saru", "Osman" killed him too at the "Battle of Domaniç" with an arrow strike.. during the founding of the Ottoman State.. "Osman" killed "Saru" in the heart of the battle, witnessed by very many people.. it did not pass unnoticed in the crowd as "Osman" had hoped.. so they called it the "Battle of the Twins".
Then "Osman" wanted to erase this tragedy from people's minds, so he had his historians write that it was named the "Battle of the Twins".. because it took place in a Turkish village called "İkizce İkizce", and this word in Turkish means "the twin".. in fact "İkizce İkizce" is a proper noun.. it has no meaning.. and it does not mean "twin" in Turkish.
Well, in the middle of all this.. how did it begin and where was the truth? Who is this "Ertuğrul" and how did he arrive and how did his star rise?
And the answers to these questions would take long to recount...
So our story of the "Ottoman Caliphate" has a remainder.
