As the spies of the secret "Manhattan" project kept falling.. the hair on Americans' heads stood on end.. before one single name.. one wrapped in dangerously accurate information.

Because this time.. it was not the name of an American recruited by the Soviets, to serve them from the very heart of the Manhattan Project.. that dangerous project whose goal was to produce the first nuclear weapon in the history of the world.

This time the name was a real catastrophe.. because the code name belonged to a Soviet intelligence man from the start.. one who played the role of a sleeper cell for long years.. until the moment came when he moved.. and slipped into the heart of the Manhattan Project.

The Soviet intelligence man.. holder of the code name "Delmar".

And "Delmar" was not an American who got recruited.. he was originally a Soviet sleeper cell.

And this sleeper cell is a person from another country whose true loyalty belongs to that other, original country of his.. and he is planted in a foreign country for decades.. and blends in among its people and opens a business or works a perfectly ordinary job.. and he never practises espionage at all, even if the most dangerous information in the universe happens to land in his lap by chance.. until his orders come, and then he activates.. and turns from a sleeper cell into a wide-awake spy.

And the spy with the code name "Delmar".. the Americans were baffled by him and never reached him at all.. and they spent everything cheap and dear to know him.. and they recruited their agents in half the planet for more than half a century.. to reach his identity.. and they never managed to reach him at all.

"George Koval".. who lived in America his whole life as an ordinary immigrant citizen, while he was in origin a Soviet spy.. and he joined school and university very normally, and shone and succeeded, until he became a distinguished scientist.. and American intelligence and the security agencies chose him.. as a man above suspicion.. to join the Manhattan Project.

In an American film called "Salt".. the story of this sleeper cell is shown precisely.

And "Koval" was a physicist, and an electrical engineer, and in him all the threads met and at his hands they ended, so he was the most valuable of the Soviet spies in the Manhattan Project.. and his efforts are what really shortened the time enormously for the Soviets, to build their first bomb.

And "Koval" stole from the Americans secrets they had not dreamed in their worst nightmares would leak.. and he kept working hard and labouring in the Manhattan Project and solving its problems and serving America in sincerity and devotion.. until he was referred to retirement, and declared to them that he wished to spend his last days in his motherland "Russia".. so the American government granted him a colossal reward in appreciation of his efforts, with a special luxurious flight ticket at their expense.. to carry him to Russia...!

And in Russia.. "Koval" joined the Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology in the field of scientific research and worked as a teacher there.. and lived an extremely ordinary life.. no different from the life of any ordinary Russian man, until God took him on his bed in quiet, in the year 2006.. at the age of 93.

The story of "Delmar" and his identity became known.. and American intelligence was stunned by it as much as you and I were, in 2007.. when the Russian President "Vladimir Putin".. announced his role, and praised him.. and granted him the title "Hero of the Russian Federation".. for his services in that period...!

The important thing is that in that period, there appeared in the documents being decrypted, as we said in the previous posts.. a spy whose code name was "Alek". And of course, with the fall of the network.. he was already exposed...

"Alan Nunn May", the English Cambridge professor.. and he used to steal extremely small samples of uranium - 233 and 235, and smuggle them out of the project.. and he was sacrificing his health and his life with this move because he used to hide them in a tobacco tin.. until he went out and handed it to another Soviet agent.. who would catch it in a special container. This move harmed "Alan" greatly and caused him ulcers and tumours, and blood problems.. that made him need blood transfusions for the rest of his life.

"Alan" confessed calmly when they arrested him.. and refused to call what he did "espionage".. and said that he sacrificed his health to complete his "noble" work.. and he left prison because of his health condition.. and lived until he died in 2003 of a blood clot in the lung.

The Manhattan Project spy network ended with several other code names, which have not been revealed until this moment nor have their owners been identified.. "Guru", "Guardian", "Z", "B", "Task", and others.

All the spies of the Manhattan Project admitted that the reason for their spying was not money - most of them did not really need it - but that they wanted to balance the powers in the world.. and that this terrible weapon should not be in the hands of the United States alone.

A strange dilemma.. because truly, had the Soviets not built their atomic bomb as well.. and the powers not been balanced.. God alone knows what the United States would have done in the world. There are experts who see these spies as heroes who balanced the global powers.. some of them are Americans, by the way.. and experts who see them as traitors who hastened the end of the world rather than the opposite.. because now any world war means the destruction of the whole planet.. instead of the victory of one state.
