The penultimate episode on the subject of science fiction literature.. and another famous technique is the "unexpected ending".. or as they call it in the kitchen, "the twist".
Almost no one hasn't seen the film "Saw".. in it there is the genius mechanical engineer who loses his child and his lover and becomes depressed, then gets cancer.. so he slides from the edge of genius into madness.. and begins to kill.. He always places his victims in a "Jigsaw" puzzle, like a jigsaw puzzle. If the victim solves the puzzle, he can defuse the complex trap he built and survive, and his soul is purified thanks to the terror and nervous pressure he was subjected to.. and if he can't, he dies.
In the first part, it becomes clear that the corpse thrown in the bathroom throughout the film is the killer himself, "John Kramer".. with complex makeup and a simple drug, he was able to play the role of the corpse the whole time without moving.. and he is the one who moved all the other killers. In the first 3 parts of the series, "Kramer" is, to us, a repulsive criminal.. but in the fourth part, something happens that turns the course of events.
"John Kramer", in truth, selects his victims carefully.. a child rapist.. a procuress who serves this rapist.. a husband who tortures his wife.. a corrupt policeman who caused the hanging of innocent people.. a doctor who hit a little girl with his car, left her to die and fled.. a bribed judge.. This is a "twist" in the middle of the events that makes you sympathize with "John Kramer" to some extent.. The man isn't that bad.. on the contrary, we might even cheer for him.. "John Kramer" plays on all of our fears.. If a harasser raped my little girl.. what would I wish would happen to him? If a judge caused the hanging of my innocent husband in exchange for a bribe.. and so on.
After the death of "John Kramer", his crimes continue in his very style.. This is a second "twist".. The policeman who was chasing "Kramer" himself became the new killer.. He was chasing "Kramer" and hated him madly, but at some point, with the information available to him about the victims.. he began to admire him, then to be dazzled, then to be fascinated.. until one day someone kidnapped him.. and he woke up in a basement to find himself face to face with "Kramer".. and here.. the policeman's life changes and he asks "Kramer" to become his teacher.
Here too, "Kramer" presents a technique called projection.. In the mind and creed of the writer, "John Kramer" is not a killer to begin with.. He symbolizes God.. the one who puts us through test after test, so that our souls may be purified and we become stronger.. and if we fail.. we go a harsh, painful going and lose those we love.
The projection technique must be done with art and intelligence.. meaning don't bring me a man wearing a military uniform and carrying a machine gun under his country's flag.. and tell me "this is projection because he's an army officer".. Of course he is, he's not a plumber...
In Marvel films you will always find American science somewhere.. This is a certain kind of projection, because "it is the land of the superheroes who are never defeated".. He plants this in the minds of the viewers and the readers.
Projection is the child of psychology, an unconscious defense mechanism.. by which a person throws his flaws, shortcomings and desires onto another person. Think of the cheating husband who suspects his wife all the time when she has done nothing.. and the thief who tells you "everyone is a thief and everyone steals".. the cruel husband who accuses his wife all the time of being emotionless. In short, it is the summary of the Arab proverb "She threw me with her own defect and slipped away".
The person onto whom the projection is made is often innocent of what he is being accused of.
In literature, the story isn't much different.. The super Avengers and American science.. okay.. America lost every war it entered historically.. and its society is fragile, fragmented, cruel.. with no superheroes in it.. and no nice Friday evenings in it.. in a treadmill you'll keep going round like oxen until you find yourself in your eighties and you haven't enjoyed any life.
Among the famous projection operations is sexual projection.. you find the writer putting into the novel what makes his mouth water behind closed doors! Among the examples of this are novels like "Chicago" and "Yacoubian". You must be careful about this bit.. because what whets your appetite may be repulsive to me and vice versa.. the sexual act is, in its essence, "feelings".. and not a practice between tree frogs for the sake of satisfying lust or for the purpose of reproduction.. if you'd like to talk about it, describe the feelings.. that is refined and enough.
There is a complete sexual act and pregnancy described in 3 words in the noble verse "And when he covered her, she carried".. This style is very powerful.. if you want to elaborate on it in "feelings", no objection.. but don't bring me into your bedroom to see you wishing what would happen if you were alone with a female.
Projection doesn't have to envelop the whole novel like "Children of the Alley".. or "Saw".. it can disappear and surface from time to time.. The late "Mahmoud Abdel Aziz" in "Gabal El Halal".. there were many moments when he turned into a projection onto Egypt itself.. especially in his conflict with "Ken Gideon".. the arms dealer disguised as an investor.. whose name makes clear exactly which country he is from.
This leads us to another technique, which is empathy.. in order to write well, you have to empathize well with the character you're writing.. Read a bit about the subject.. The "Cannibals" in your story don't have to have fangs with drool running from their jaws.. The truth, according to scientists' studies, is that the cannibal is a very polite, refined person with etiquette, and he practices containment with great skill.. until he gets you alone and makes you a cordon bleu. The closest example of the real cannibal is Dr. "Hannibal Lecter" in the "Silence of the Lambs" series.
The hero can't just stand facing a tank, raise the RPG and chant "my life for I-don't-know-who".. That doesn't happen and won't happen and is vulgar.. What goes on deep inside him is much more worthy and more precious.. and his heart pounds, and time slows down for him, and a drop of sweat creeps down his forehead, the memories he goes through and the feelings he feels as his finger pulls the trigger.. All of that you can describe.
The moment of parting.. no one stands in it and says to his lover, "There will come a day when we'll remember that bloody sunset as a cloak of purple silk stained with..."... It is a moment of painful, deadly, terrifying silence.. but what goes on in the depths.. the feelings.. are very valuable and precious.. describing them is better than spoken words that will never express the truth.
Repetition is a technique that lets you deceive the reader or practice illusion on him and he believes it as he pleases, because the rest of your content is strong.. or he has no alternative, or you have a monopoly on it.. In order to do this you have to be a very famous and very strong writer.. "Superman".. disguises himself as "Clark Kent", the innocent journalist, by wearing glasses! Of course this is absurd.. and if you wrote it in a book, readers would come to the signing event and shoot you. But the colossal company "DC Comics" can do it without fear.. and repeat it a lot until your brain automatically learns to overlook it.
Of course this fades and weakens when a competitor appears who doesn't practice the naïve illusion of repetition.. The Spider-Man films at the box office have come to beat the "Superman" films.
The technique of continuity is one of the very important techniques if your novel is long or in parts.. It doesn't work for the devil in the first part of my novel to be named "Lucifer" and in the second part for me to forget and call him "Abbas", for example.. "Marvel" does this move with genius.. there are many examples of this.. but among the strongest writers who do this technique with skill are also the writers of "Marvel".
When the cosmic titan "Thanos" defeated "The Hulk" and "Thor".. he told the latter that he knows the meaning of defeat very well.. How is it that you know you are right and doing the right thing and yet you are defeated while you are worthy of success.. A deadly feeling that turns the legs of the strongest men into jelly.. meaning his legs can no longer carry him.
In the last part, when the Iron Man tore the infinity stones from "Thanos" and used them.. and "Thanos" realized that he had been defeated.. the first thing "Thanos" did was walk with a noticeable limp and crippled steps, then he sat down on the nearest rock.
There is a technique called the red herring. Russian smugglers used to carry a shipment of aged red herring with them, and if snow patrols chased them, they would start throwing this herring in scattered places during their escape.. and this would disrupt the sense of smell of the trained dogs tracking them, and make them follow the trail of the herring itself, or they would never reach the scent of those they were chasing.
This technique in the novel means that you plant misleading threads for me that make me suspect a certain person the whole time.. he's the killer.. and then in the end it turns out it isn't him.. This technique was used brilliantly in "the film Lucky Number Slevin".. the victim whom everyone is chasing and who gets beaten up every now and then is the killer himself.. and he arranged all of this himself, for himself, in order to reach one specific person.
Next time we'll close these science fiction episodes and provide ample examples for them.. and then, God willing, the talk will have.. a conclusion.
